Kelheim to Regensburg Saturday May 20th

Today was just a short hop of 35 kms. but I wanted to revisit the first stop on our Danube cruise which because of the circumstances was somewhat fraught. Today is the first day of anything resembling warm sunshine and everybody and all his relations was out in force. It was a fantastic festival atmosphere with many groups of people wearing the traditinal Bavarian costumes of Lederhosen and long decorated dresses.

I might have been as well to walk because my bike was useless in the face of the relentless hordes determined to be run over on the roads. Every single person seemed to be carrying at least one bottle of beer. But the atmosphere remained good natured. However it was still the afternoon.

I arrived at the canoe club of Regensburg campsite around lunch time. It is a spacious grassy area for travellers only and we have the use of the club facilities, showers toilets etc. !0 euros for adults 5 euros for youths and kids go free. There is no wifi but I have managed to hook up some electricity so the devices are recharged and useable When I arrived one of the club members was sitting in the sun surrounded by books obviously studying. I asked what he was studying and he said he was going to be a primary school teacher with sport. He went out of his way to be helpful. When I asked about the nearest Geldautomat (ATM) he looked on his phone and showed me the way. Luckily there was a supermarket next door so I killed two birds with one stone.

When I returned from exploring Regensburg, the French wave had arrived and are encamped right next door again. The kids are incredibly well behaved. We have quite an international group camped tonight. Across from me at the moment in a little shelter with a table and some chairs is a German lady of a certain age who is keeping her blog in long hand.Sitting outside his tent is an incredible Polish guy who has WALKED from Poland. 60kms a day. He plans to walk to Basel (reverse of my route) then across France to take the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostella. He is an unassuming but remarkable man.

Across the way in two one man tents are Nigel and Booy two Australians from Melbourne who are cycling Eurovelo 6 from Lake Konstanz to Vienna. Quite an international gathering.

I can't upload pictures until I have wifi. lots of pics to follow.

distance cycled so far:    616kms

It is ironic that I have the whole day to get myself to the airport so I was up at 05.50 wide awake. The very quiet Irishman whose name was...
